Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? We’ve got answers to help you get started.

A Tintype is a one-of-a-kind photo created by reacting silver salts with light on a dark metal plate. It was one of the first accessible portrait photography formats and finally allowed for everyday people to have a photograph of themselves or their family. For more information on the history of the tintype, visit the National Gallery’s website.

Ten days upon receiving your order.

A tintype plate is surface to which the image is made on to. Your image will be made onto an aluminium plate.

Tintypes are an archival process with the plates lasting well over one hundred years. Images from the 1850s are still viewable today.

JPEG or TIFF image files, saved at the highest setting and at the largest size available, are best. If you have any questions about this, please let me know, and I would be happy to help.

The images most suitable for a tintype have a normal tonal range, not too dark or too light. Blue colours will be represented as white, while red will render as black.

The largest plate we offer for transfers is 8” x 10”.

Yes, you will receive a digital image of the tintype transfer.

About Tintype Transfers

The wet plate transfer process melds the alchemy of this 1850s silver-based process with the digital era to make one-of-a-kind images. The wet plate process resists perfection with its chemical aberrations and irregularities, resulting in artifacts pinpointing the moment of creation, unlike any digital image.

Images provided by the client are prepared in Photoshop to be transferred to the wet plate medium. Finished plates are sealed with archival varnish, ensuring the highest quality and longevity of the images.

Finished plates are ready to ship in ten days.

As a photographer, I’ve always been drawn to the timeless quality of tintype photography. With Digital Tintypes, I wanted to combine the classic beauty of this historic process with the convenience and precision of digital technology. My goal is to create pieces that honor the past while embracing the creative possibilities of the present.
